Text: Journey of the Cross – Tennebrae Service
When we hear Jesus say “it is finished”, it would be easy to think that this was the end. This word from the cross, however, was not the last words he spoke. The key words from the cross are his last words. “Into your hands, I commend my Spirit.” Jesus did accomplish something on the cross, but it was not an ending. It was a beginning. Jesus connected us to God. He overcome our sin and secured for us a living relationship. By commending his Spirit to God, he commended ours as well. Now we are called to live within and through this new relationship with God and each other. It is this new relationship that is meant to define who we are and how we live from here. God is doing something new. Good Friday is good not because of where it ends, but where it leads. It’s Friday, but Sunday is coming!
