VOLUNTEER RULES
Requirements before entry
- Groups of up to 8 volunteers, available in the late afternoon/early evening.
- Groups are required to meal plan and purchase ingredients ahead of time.
- Groups are cooking for about 60 guests. We ask that groups share their menu ahead of time so that we can avoid duplicate menus during the week.
- All volunteers must be age 13 or older. Teenage volunteers must be accompanied by an adult at all times and there needs to be a 3:1 teen to adult ratio.
Please keep in mind that we serve medically fragile patients and their families. If you are sick, please stay home.
Requirements after entry
Each volunteer is required to sign-in at arrival using the QR code located in the kitchen
- Volunteers are required to stay in the kitchen, as our common areas are currently closed to volunteers. The kitchen will be closed to guests while volunteers are cooking.
- Volunteers are required to wash hands regularly and wear gloves while preparing food. We encourage changing gloves often. Groups are encouraged to bring their own gloves.
- Groups are required to cook all food on-site. We are unable to accept food prepared at home. We can accept items that have been prepared in an inspected facility (grocery store, restaurant, caterer, etc.).
- We are currently unable to serve meals buffet style, so groups are required to plate meals in individual to-go boxes. To-go boxes must be labeled with contents and dated and we encourage pre-printing labels to save time.
- Groups should bring their own 3 compartment to-go boxes. Volunteers will not directly serve food to guests.
- Groups are required to clean the kitchen and any items used. We ask that volunteers sanitize any areas that have been touched during meal prep.
Timing:
- Dinner is 7 days a week. A calendar of available dinner dates can be found here: https://rmhctriangle.org/our-programs/rmh-of-durham/durham-meals-calendar/. If you see a date that works for your group, please email to confirm.
- Groups are required to arrive between 3:30-4PM. Groups may arrive as early as 3PM with prior approval.
- The meal should be ready between 5-6PM
- Volunteers should leave after kitchen has been cleaned. Guests will not have full access to the kitchen until the space has been cleaned and sanitized and volunteers have left.
Mask Policy Update:
**Effective immediately masks are optional. Masks are encouraged; however, masking is no longer required at all times in the Ronald McDonald House. We do require staff and volunteers to wear a mask when interacting with guests, so please be sure to have a mask with you while visiting the House.**
